Mold is a common problem that affects a number of American homes. It causes foul odors, discoloration to your walls and floors, and even presents health hazards if they persist. In today’s post, your leading window installation expert, Kingdom Restoration Inc, shares the common areas in your home that are prone to mold growth.
What Is Mold and What Causes It?
Mold is a fungus that grows from spores that spread through the air. Once these spores clump together and grow on surfaces, they can be visible to the human eye. Usually, they appear as white or green stains that appear in certain areas of your home. They also smell damp or musty when you come close to them. No home is safe from mold as every house has a space that has oxygen, darkness, and warmth present in it. Once moisture comes into these surfaces, then mold will start to multiply. This issue must be immediately addressed, especially if there are people who have respiratory problems as these can worsen it.
Common Mold Growth Spots
- Bathroom. Your shower has tons of moisture and water for mold to thrive in. This is especially true if you enjoy a warm shower from time to time. Bathrooms that have poor ventilation are especially susceptible to mold growth. Consult your bathroom remodeling contractor to properly ventilate your bathroom space. Inspect spaces such as the grout of your tiles, near your shower, the bathtub, the sink and even the toilet. These are common surfaces where mold growth occurs.
- Kitchen. Aside from the water that gets on your backsplashes, the leftover food that piles up in your sink can be the cause for mold growth. The humidity caused by operating your stove and sink can also accelerate its growth. Common spots that are prone to mold growth in your kitchen are directly in, on, or even under your kitchen sink. Be sure to check your pantry and refrigerator for any expired food items with mold in them. Check your stove and microwave for any spillage and splatters that can cause mold growth as well. Ensure that your kitchen is properly ventilated with the use of an exhaust, opening the windows, or even using a fan.
- Bedroom. While not as common, it isn’t entirely impossible for mold to grow in your bedroom. Check your mattress for any signs of mold since moisture could be trapped inside of it. Inspect your windows and see if there are any signs of mold within your sills or the frame. If mold has spread all over your windows, have your professional window installer replace it with a new one. Don’t forget to check out your AC and heating vents for any signs of mold as well.
Overall, the key to preventing mold is to dry up any condensation you find in your home and try to keep humidity at normal levels through the use of dehumidifiers, or other ventilation methods, to remove excess moisture from your home.
